Hot Work Permits

What is this?

A Hot Work Permit is a formal authorization required for any temporary operation involving open flames or producing heat and/or sparks. This includes brazing, cutting, grinding, soldering, and welding.

When to use this?

Use this whenever a worker or subcontractor needs to perform hot work outside of a designated, permanent hot work area. The permit ensures fire watches are established, combustible materials are removed or shielded, and fire extinguishing equipment is on hand.

Why this works this way

Unlike confined space or excavation, hot work isn’t itself a named High Risk Construction Work category — the permit exists to satisfy the general WHS duty to systematically manage the fire/ignition risk (identify, control, monitor). That’s why the mandatory post-work fire watch period has to elapse before you can close the permit — closing early would leave that risk unmanaged.

Step-by-Step Guide

Reviewing and Authorizing a Permit

1. Navigate to Permits > Hot Work and Select a pending permit.
2. Review the location and description of the hot work.
3. Verify the safety controls, including the assigned Fire Watch, clearance of combustibles, and available fire extinguishers.
4. If all safety measures are confirmed, Click Activate Permit.

Closing a Permit

1. After the work is completed and the mandatory fire watch period (usually 30-60 minutes post-work) has ended without incident, open the active permit.
2. Scroll to the Close Permit section.
3. Fill in the Closure Notes confirming the area is safe and secure.
4. Click Close Permit.
